The story of aero integration

Introducing the S5.

The S5 is the most advanced aerodynamic road bicycle ever developed by Cervélo. Inspired by the demands of the world’s top pro riders, the S5 deploys everything Cervélo has learned in 16 years of aerodynamic design, and combines it with advanced material engineering honed in our Project California facility. Using the latest TrueAeroTM shapes combined with our most advanced lay-up knowledge, the S5 doubles the aerodynamic advantage the S3 had over traditional road bicycles. By adding BBrightTM and SmartwallTM engineering, we maximize energy response, and raise the torsional rigidity a whopping 12% over its highly acclaimed predecessor. The result is a quantifiably faster bicycle, which is also agile and responsive, yet smooth and comfortable on the toughest road surfaces.

The ultimate lightweight frame

The R5 VWD is one of the lightest frames in the world. Lighter than the R3 Team, its impressive test scores are achieved because Cervélo maintains stiffness and strength standards for even its lightest frames. The R5 achieves this by using the technologies developed at the Project California, and mates then with highly complex lay-ups to further save weight and add stiffness.

When Johan Vansummeren won the 2011 Paris-Roubaix, he followed in the footsteps of Fabian Cancellara and Stuart O’Grady who won on the same grueling cobblestones using the R3. In fact the R3 has been on the podium of the world’s toughest race every year since it was first launched in 2006.

To this day, the R3 is engineered to optimize strength, stiffness and comfort while offering low weight in every situation. Built on the lessons learned at Project California, the Smartwall™ optimized second generation Squoval™ tubes place material where it is needed most, and remove it where it is not. We include the Cervélo optimized 1 3/8" steer tube taper for confidence when descending and cornering, BBrightTM to increase bottom bracket stiffness to new levels, and maintain comfort by using thinner than ever lightweight seat stays.

Andreas Klier of the Cervélo Test Team said the RS is the “very, very, very, very, very, very best bike" he’s ever ridden in Paris-Roubaix, the world’s toughest bike race for equipment. With the same SquovalTM shapes and SmartwallTM engineering as R3 and R5, the RS maintains stiffness and strength, but adds a curved version of the Ultra-thin seatstays to boost comfort.
